Priscilla Chan was born in the United States to Chinese-Vietnamese refugee parents who fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon. Though she grew up in Massachusetts, Priscilla’s early life was deeply shaped by her parents’ experiences as refugees. Her family struggled to adjust to their new life in America, and Priscilla often acted as a translator for her grandparents and other relatives who didn’t speak English. She learned early on the values of sacrifice, hard work, and the importance of education as the path to a better life.

Priscilla attended public schools and excelled academically, eventually earning a place at Harvard University. It was here that she met her future husband, Mark Zuckerberg. But even as she became part of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions, Priscilla never forgot her roots or her commitment to giving back to those in need. After graduating from Harvard, she decided to pursue a career in medicine, enrolling at the University of California, San Francisco, where she earned her medical degree. Her desire to become a doctor was driven by her passion for helping vulnerable populations, a reflection of her own family’s experiences as immigrants.

Priscilla’s greatest contribution to society, however, has come in the form of her philanthropy. Alongside her husband, she co-founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in 2015, a philanthropic organization with the mission of advancing human potential and promoting equal opportunity. The initiative focuses on improving education, eradicating disease, and reforming the criminal justice system. What sets Priscilla apart is her dedication to addressing social inequality at its roots—she believes that access to quality education and healthcare should be a right for everyone, not a privilege for a few.

Her story is important because it reminds us of the lasting impact that immigrants and the children of immigrants can have on society when given the chance. Priscilla’s journey, from the daughter of refugees to a physician and philanthropist, serves as a powerful example of how empathy and service can guide one’s life. She inspires others to see their own struggles as opportunities to create meaningful change in the world, and her work demonstrates that true success is not measured by personal gain but by how much one gives back to the community. Through her initiatives in education, healthcare, and social justice, Priscilla Chan is reshaping the future, proving that even the most difficult beginnings can lead to extraordinary achievements.
