In a groundbreaking release, the American Immigration Council unveiled its 2023 Map the Impact report, an interactive data-driven tool that captures the economic power of immigrants across the United States. This detailed map offers insights into immigrant contributions, revealing their significant role in bolstering the nation’s workforce, economy, and communities.
With over 45 million immigrants now calling the U.S. home, accounting for one in eight residents, the report sheds light on how immigrants are not just a part of the fabric of America—they are key to its growth. Between 2016 and 2021, the immigrant population grew by 1.6 million, contributing to 18.3% of the nation’s overall population increase.
Economic Powerhouses
The numbers speak volumes. Immigrant households earned a staggering $1.9 trillion in 2021, contributing over $500 billion in taxes. With $1.4 trillion in spending power, immigrants continue to fuel consumer demand, helping to sustain local economies across the country.
Entrepreneurial Drive
Immigrants’ impact on the business landscape is profound, as they represent 20% of all U.S. entrepreneurs. In Florida, for example, immigrant-led businesses are thriving, with a remarkable growth of 87,500 new immigrant entrepreneurs from 2016 to 2021. Nationwide, they generated an impressive $95.6 trillion in business income.
Immigration: The Economic Backbone
Nan Wu, Director of Research at the American Immigration Council, emphasized the profound role of immigrants in driving America’s economy: “This data puts the economic power of America’s immigrants in stark view, clearly showing how immigrants are contributing to every state in the nation every day.”
The Map the Impact tool provides a powerful visual representation of how immigrants support industries, from tech to agriculture, offering users the ability to share data with elected officials through social media and advocate for policies that recognize immigrants’ contributions.
The message is clear: immigrants aren’t just shaping the future of America—they’re powering it.
