Immigrants play a crucial role in the U.S. healthcare system, especially amid ongoing workforce shortages. As of 2022, they constitute 15.6% of all nurses and 27.7% of all health aides nationwide. In states like New York and New Jersey, over half of all health aides are foreign-born (American Immigration Council).

The United States has long faced a nursing shortage, influenced by factors such as an aging population, increased demand for healthcare services, and a significant number of nurses retiring or leaving the profession. Projections suggest that by 2030, the U.S. will need to add 3.5 million health care workers, including 868,000 registered nurses, to maintain current health care worker-to-population ratios (Center for American Progress).

Internationally educated nurses have been vital in mitigating these shortages. For instance, a substantial number of registered nurses in the U.S. are immigrants, with Filipinos comprising approximately 27% of this group (Center for American Progress). However, the immigration process for these professionals is often lengthy and complex, involving credential evaluations, licensure requirements, and limited visa availability, which can hinder their ability to work in the U.S.

Addressing the healthcare workforce shortage requires a multifaceted approach, including:

  • Streamlining immigration pathways for qualified international healthcare professionals.
  • Expanding educational opportunities and support for domestic students pursuing healthcare careers.
  • Improving working conditions and providing incentives to retain existing healthcare workers.

By implementing these strategies, the U.S. can strengthen its healthcare workforce to meet the growing demands of its population.
